The Peach Moon

Theoxenios Full Moon

The Peach Moon, also known as The Peach Blossom Moon, is a celebration of joy, light, and wonder of springtime. This full Moon occurs during the month of Theoxenios, when flowers such as Star Jasmine, Southern Magnolias, and Azalea grace the air with their sweet fragrances and beautiful blooms (source: Charleston Gardens). It is a time to enjoy the light and abundant nature of the season, and to truly take time to appreciate the changes occurring all around us. The Peach Moon serves as a reminder of the importance of joy, and how with change comes beauty.

Taking time to gather wildflowers or visit natural bodies of water is auspicious, as are picnics and potlucks.

history vs modern day

While full moons may have been celebrated in ancient times, there is little to no record of a specific festival or observance for these lunar events (unlike Noumenia, etc.)

The traditions, alignments, and recommendations for our Full Moon Festivals come from a variety of places - not all of which are Hellenic in nature. Our Full Moon Festivals are also inspired by the local flora and fauna of South Carolina (where our Temple is located) as well as from other pagan and neo-pagan Full Moon traditions.

The Peach Moon is named in honor of the variety of peaches grown in South Carolina. Peach blossoms typically bloom in Herakleios and Theoxenios, with the latter being the common time when you will find these blossoms at their peak (source: Specialty Produce). Interestingly, despite the state of Georgia being so heavily associated with peaches, South Carolina harvests over three times more peaches than Georgia does (source: South Carolina Department of Agriculture).

The beautifully delicate and enchanting peach blossoms show just how beautiful the circle of life and the circle of growth can be. As season after season, these blossoms reappear and then shed their petals to give way to the growth of the sweet fruit for which they are named.

Theoxenios is the month in which we honor Lady Aphroditê, Goddess of Love and Beauty. In this, The Peach Moon is a time to appreciate the beauty of the world around us, and the beauty of ourselves. The Peach Moon is a great time to work on showing yourself care, compassion, and love - it is just as important that we love ourselves as it is important that we love those in our lives.
